Today, as natural resources become scarcer and manufacturing costs rise, so people realize that recycling is an important issue. Waste management was created to find the efficient ways to handle the waste, to give it a new life, in order to achieve sustainable utilization of natural assets. That is why waste management education has become very popular today. The more people know about the eco-friendly ways to handle waste, the better our world become. Learning waste management helps to reduce the harmful impact on our environment and manage materials in the more effective way.

Everyday people consume and dispose of numerous things made of finite natural resources. Waste management teaches how to reduce consumption, reuse products and recycle waste materials in order to conserve natural resources of our planet.

Waste Management Education: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The main rule of waste management education can be defined by 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. It means that to minimize the harmful impact on our planet, we have to reduce consumption, reuse products if it is possible and recycle in order to give used materials new life. Both 3 R’s are helpful when it comes to improving the environment and saving money. Though there is a 3 R’s rule, each R is related to different concepts. Let us see what they are.

REDUCE

As we said before, reduce is related to consumption. So it obvious that its meaning can be defined as less buying and less using. In the modern world, we cannot refuse from buying products we need in our daily life. But before buying something, it is always a great idea to ask yourself if you really need this or that product. For example, you can take a book in the library instead of buying it. As well as you can share tools with your neighbor instead of buying your own. What is more, you can always buy thing with less packaging or to choose biodegradable one.

REUSE

Sometimes there are ways to reuse the product that looks like the one that needs to be disposed of. For example, instead of buying trash packs at the supermarket, you can use plastic grocery bags to collect your garbage. Also, you can simply use refillable jars to buy milk.

RECYCLE

Recycling is used to make new products of discarded materials. For example, it is possible to make a newspaper out of junk mail, as well as to make a bench from plastic grocery bags. Though recycling is a great way to handle waste, it requires a large amount of energy and water, so the first two Rs are prime choices.

Waste Management Techniques

Waste management enthusiasts have created numerous ways to manage waste. When it comes to waste management education, it is important to know them.

LANDFILL

It is one of the most traditional, as well as one of the most inexpensive ways to handle waste. Still, only the waste that does not harm the environment can be dumped in landfills.

INCINERATION

Though incineration is the way to handle with waste, it is not considered as an effective one. It harms the environment by emitting of pollutants, it destroys the recyclable material while consuming resources and energy.

COMPOSTING

This method is applicable to organic waste materials that become useful in agriculture and landscaping.

MECHANICAL BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT

This method requires the building of special plants where due to the MBT process recyclable content can be extracted from the waste and turned into calorific fuel.

PYROLYSIS AND GASIFICATION

These are thermal techniques that allow turning waste into solid or liquid when it comes to pyrolysis and synthetic gas when it comes to gasification.
